Spring Conference

Spring Conference - These are targeted to the exporter with one to five years of experience. While there is some "how to" information provided at these conferences, it is typically focused on more complex issues as opposed to completing and submitting forms. Some typical topics would be licensing of more complex programs, such as when an agreement is appropriate versus a license, and how to use exemptions in exporting defense articles. This conference is normally held in the Spring in the western half of the US.

Fall Conference

Fall Conference - These are for the exporter with an excess of five years experience. These conferences are typically held in the Washington, D.C. area in the fall. Due to the location and the level of experience of the targeted attendees the focus is at an overview level. Guest speakers are usually from the hierarchy of the export controls community and they provide insight into government policy. Issues addressed in the conference are geared to prevalent industry issues as highlighted by our membership.

The Society for International Affairs, Inc. (SIA), is a volunteer, non-profit, educational organization that was jointly formed in 1967 by US Government and Industry. SIA provides a forum for the exchange of information related to export and import licensing. SIA interests cover the entire spectrum of licensing issues pertaining to the Department of Commerce, Defense, State and Treasury.

Types of Memberships

There are three types of membership in SIA: 1. GENERAL MEMBERSHIP To be eligible for a General Membership your company must meet the following criteria: (1) Registered with the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (2) Located in the Washington, DC area (within a 50 mile radius) (3) Sponsor an SIA business luncheon meeting when called upon to do so. Duties include: (a) Mail luncheon/workshop flyer to all active members (2000+). This includes paying for postage. (b) Collect registration fees. (c) Prepare attendee badges. (d) Assist with registration on the day of the event. NOTE: Only persons employed at the business address of the General Member organization are eligible to be listed as individual General Members. Persons employed in facility addresses outside the Washington DC area, even if there is a corporate relationship to an existing General Member office, may ONLY apply for Associate Membership status. ...

Types of Conferences

SIA's mission is to educate the international trade community in all aspects of technology transfer. SIA's unique relationship maintained with the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls and other US Government agencies is key to the Society's success. DDTC and the other Government agencies are essential resources for the content and speakers for SIA's educational programs.

SIA has divided the program content into two different levels to ensure the conference attendees are receiving the appropriate level of educational content and material based upon their level of experience in the field.

Regardless of what level of experience you have the conferences provide the opportunity for industry and government to colloborate, discuss and learn!

Voluntary Disclosure Handbook Task Force Need interested parties to chair or co-chair the “Voluntary Disclosure Handbook” task force. The chair or co-chair does not have to be in the immediate Washington, D.C. area, but must be willing to commit the time and effort to complete the Handbook. The individual(s) must demonstrate good leadership skills and be well organized. Basics Conference - These are typically geared to the newcomer to export controls. The target conference attendee has less than one year of experience. These conferences provide basic "how to" information on filling out and submitting requests for export authorizations (e.g., DSP-5s, 61s, 73s, 85s, and technical assistance, manufacturing, and warehouse and distribution agreements.) We normally have two such conferences each year, one in the Spring in the western half of the United States and the other in the Summer in the eastern half.
