2025 SCHOLARSHIP RUBRIC

Welcome to the Society of International Affairs (SIA) scholarship program. Our scholarship is designed to recognize and reward individuals who have shown a strong commitment to international trade and the mission of the SIA. In evaluating applications, we place the greatest emphasis on an applicant's Demonstrated Interest in International Trade (25%), which includes relevant work history, field of study, and coursework. We also highly value Academic Achievement (20%), which considers GPA, course rigor, and academic improvement. Other important factors include SIA Involvement (15%), Leadership and Community Service (15%), Personal Essay (15%), and Letters of Recommendation (10%). We encourage all applicants to highlight these areas in their applications. We look forward to reviewing your application and learning more about your interest in international trade and the SIA.

1. Academic Achievement (20%)

  • GPA: Consideration of the applicant's overall GPA.
  • Course Rigor: Consideration of the difficulty of the courses the applicant has taken.
  • Academic Improvement: Consideration of any significant improvements in the applicant's academic performance over time.

2. SIA Membership (15%)

  • Length of Membership: Consideration of how long the applicant has been a member of SIA.
  • Participation: Consideration of the applicant's level of participation in SIA activities and events.

3. Leadership and Community Service (15%)

  • Leadership Roles: Consideration of any leadership roles the applicant has held, either within the SIA or in other organizations.
  • Community Service: Consideration of the applicant's involvement in community service activities.

4. Personal Essay (15%)

  • Content: Consideration of the substance of the applicant's essay, including their goals, experiences, and reasons for applying for the scholarship.
  • Writing Quality: Consideration of the quality of the applicant's writing, including clarity, organization, and grammar.

5. Letters of Recommendation (10%)

  • Quality of Letters: Consideration of the substance of the letters of recommendation, including the recommender's relationship with the applicant and their assessment of the applicant's qualifications.

6. Demonstrated Interest in International Trade (25%)

  • Relevant Work History: Consideration of any work experience the applicant has in the field of international trade.
  • Major/Field of Study: Consideration of the applicant's major or field of study. Preference may be given to applicants who are studying fields that are directly related to international trade.
  • Relevant Coursework: Consideration of any courses the applicant has taken that are relevant to international trade.
